Be or Am?

I saw this sentence on the book:

"In order that I BE free as possible...it is necessary that there BE a ways which I may commit myself..."

I understand why they used BE in the sentence, but I dont understand why they used BE in the first?

Can I say "In order that I am free as possible..."? Can I use AM instead of BE?

Cheers

You should add another as: In order that I be as free as possible... You can replace be with am if you like. The reason for the subjunctive (be) is that it can be used after in order when it expresses purpose and a that clause follows.
