"Be off the beaten track" expression

What does the expression "be off the beaten" track really mean? or what are the different meanings attached to it? I learned this expression as doing something new or literally "going off the beating track" by going to a new place that you haven't been before. Please read my sentence:

I decided go to college out of state because I wanted to be off the beaten track.

Does the context of my sentence fit the meaning of the expression? Please let me know.

Off the beaten track - somewhere that most people do not usually go. I am sure that a lot of people go to that college, so the expression is not appropriate in your sentence. Clive
