Be not about to ...

'be about to V' is usually used to describe an immediate future event.

But when it is used in negative, the meaning of the event of the verb does not seem to be just a immediate future.

How can I paraphrase the sentences below?

If you are a native speaker of English, please help me out with my understanding correctly the sentence 'I wasn't about to quit' in the context below.

In the spring of 1966, while on the Ranger, I was honorably discharged after four years of military service. Most soldiers in my position would gladly have returned home and avoided the bloodbath that was about to take place. But I had become a devoted Marine, a professional warrior, and I wasn’t about to quit. I decided to reenlist.
