Be late on something

I heard a phrase in a movie: "I'm late on my last two student loan payments". I can't think of a time I heard 'be late on sth' ever before. Is it used specifically for situations where you need to repay, but you are late? For instance, 'Cut her some slack. Her father just died and she is late on her last four rent payments'. Thank you very much.
