Be gone

Hi,

Does it work to say "He was gone" meaning "He is gone" in the past? While telling my memory. OR

"That was the first time I had seen the movie." as the past form of "This is the first time I've seen the movie." ?

Thanks in anticipation..

Next week I tell the story.

My friend Joe wasn't there anymore. I didn't know what happened. He was
