Be driven from its foundational roots ?

Hi~ What do you think the best interpetation of the phrase in red in the paragrah below?

Thanks~

------------

It was this same sales pitch that transformed terms like rogue memory and drilling
to equal educational profanity. The phrase drill and kill provides great
insight about how public education allowed itself to be driven from its
foundational roots by a campaign that had lofty goals without true comprehension
of the learning process. No teachers worth their salt would
waste their time drilling the multiplication tables when students could be
solving the next great mystery beyond DNA.
