I have a doubt with there.

I lived in London. I know a few people there.
When this sentence was discussed some of my students said why can't we see there as pronoun?

I said there is an adverb though it refers to London here.
Though I said that I felt I had not convinced them as I too started to think about it seriously and thus felt a little confus

A pronoun (pro + noun) is a word that stands for a noun.
there stands for "in that place", or, in your example sentence "in London".
So there stands for a phrase; it doesn't stand for a noun because in London is not the same as London.
