be associated with/be connected to

Every year in December, Christmas decorations of green, red and gold adorn stores, homes and street displays. It isn't an accident that these festive colors are associated with Christmas. Over time, each color has become connected to the true meaning of the holiday.

I wonder if "be associated with" and "become connected to" in the above are similar in meaning and therefore interchangeable. Thanks.
