Be and Become

Hi! Just wondering what is the difference between "be" and "become" for the below sentences? Thanks, Fulvio

1. I want to be a motor mechanic.

2. I want to become a motor mechanic.

Top answer

"be" refers to state, while "become" refers to the process of attaining that state. However, since (1) implies that the speaker is not presently a motor mechanic, it follows in any case that a "becoming" step would be necessary, so in practice the difference between the two may not be very important.
