be a cause of and being able to follow

Hello all!

1)

I would like to ask you whether the following sentence is correct:

- Several factors be a cause of the success or failure the film.

To me, the "be" does not sound good at all. I would add something like "might" or "can" before the "be".

2)

- My grandfather has so many grandchildren now, he sometimes stops being able to follow their names,....

What does this mean please?

Thank you!
