Hi Clive and thank you for raising this questions, Tia.

First the battery goes dead, then we say it is dead'

I wonder what the differences between 'the battery goes dead' and 'the battery is dead' are.

Thank you in advance.

Best wishes,

Hi,

I wonder what the differences between 'the battery goes dead' and 'the battery is dead' are.

The battery went dead last Friday. Right now, it is still dead. I'm going to go and buy a new one tomorrow.

Oh, of course. I see the difference now. I should have spotted that one is in the past tense while the other is in the present tense.

When we say 'The battery died', does it sound informal?

Hi,

Not really. It's pretty well the standard way to say it, at least where I live.
