I don't think I would say "I have to go to the bathroom" while in the middle of a forest or a desert.Maybe not, but you can say it, and it won't seem strange at all. In fact, this is even reduced to simply I have to go. Therefore, I went can mean that you did one of those bodily functions normally done in a bathroom even if it wasn't done in a bathroom.
