Bate as plural

Hello, what is the plural of the surname Bate? Is it Bate or Bates? Our friends declare,affirm and insist that when there are 2 or more of their family together, the correct term is still Bate...without the s. They can get a bit huffy about it if we playfully continue with the added s ;o)
