Basic words

Right now i have an assignment requiring me write a program to produce a list of basic words. Problem is since i am not a linguistics major (I'm minoring in it and the module with this assignment is my first linguistics module), i have no idea what characteristics are unique to basic words. Could i have some help in looking for relevant information?
