Basic sentence analysis

Hi there.

I am a Danish student and I have a little problem with the basic sentence analysis. I now have to learn all over again, because it is done in another way than I was taught earlier.

I have to break it down into functions, groups and clauses ...

I would really like some help with the following sentence, please:

A dozen of the best seats for the film were sold extremely quickly.

Would somebody please help me?

Thanks a lot.

brikble.

Hello, brikble - and welcome to English Forums. First, you had better give us a breakdown on the system asking for 'functions, groups and clauses' or a link to an explanation. Offhand and without any idea of what your teacher is looking for, I can do this: Groups: [[A dozen] [[of [the best seats]] [for [the film]]]] [were sold] [extremely quickly].

  • I don't know how you want to handle 'functions'.

We have to break the sentence down like this example, I will try to explain:

John left town.

John is the Subject, left is predicator and town is the object.

Usually we put the letter S for subject underneath the word in question, and then the pro for pronoun so it will look like this under the word John: S:pro ..

I don't know how to explain this in a better way,
