Bases

"I learned that although Japanese and American have different values, in the bases we shared the same core values." This is what I wrote. I was wondering did I use the word bases correctly or should I use other word. Basically what am I trying to say in that sentence is that although people may think Japanese and American are vastly different from each other when it comes to cultures, ideals and religions. However we also share the same values like family values.
