"Based/Basing on the data..."

Hi all,

Based on the data, the astronomers learned that the two planets have intersecting orbits.

Basing on the data, the astronomers learned that the two planets have intersecting orbits.

How does the second sentence differ from the first? I mean I think the second sentence reads a bit weird but I don't know if it is incorrect.

Thanks

Neither is right. The understood subject of the nonfinite clause must be the same as for the main clause, but you don't supply enough text to make that clear. Do something like this: Based on the data, their calculations demonstrated to the astronomers that the two planets have intersecting orbits.
