Is 2 better?

1 His films are based on emotion rather than on the esthetic.

2 His films are emotional and not very esthetic.

No. When you used "based on", be sure that you mean that. It is almost always a wooly substitute for what you actually mean. "The esthetic" is puzzling. A film can't be emotional, and everything is esthetic.
