Baseball - 'The Show'

I have made enquiries on a group where USAns predominate but have no answer. Major League Baseball is known as 'The Show'. I would like to know why, and where & when the term comes from. MW on-line doesn't help, nor, predictably, does OED. Google raises too many hits for baseball and the show to follow.
Any ideas?

I had trouble with "The Show". It's "The Big Show".

I think, though, that minor league players do talk about "going up to the show". I want to make that "the big show", but they might not.

I've never heard major league baseball called 'The Show,' but I don't follow it closely. However, that might be a good word for the televised 'Superbowl.' (the professional American football championship game)

If baseball is "the big show" and the NCAA basketball tournament is "the big dance", what does the NFL have?
