BASEBALL

(Context: American baseball)

It seems that people refer the three "plates" in baseball as "first base", "second base", and "third base" without using an article. But when people refer to multiple members of this set (let's say first base and second base), I hear both "first and second base" (singular form) and "first and second bases" (plural form).

Which one is grammatically correct?

Both are fine. American baseball - I have been told - is one of the most difficult sports to understand if you're not an American. As an American, I've never had a problem but, believe me, whatever English you hear when at a ballpark is utterly acceptable.
