2.People bartered with others in the Middle Ages.

The verb barter is both transitie and intransitive.

How about my 2nd sentence?

There's nothing wrong with using barter intransitively. However, others should be omitted: People bartered in the Middle Ages. If you insist, you could add with one another, but it's superfluous.
