Baron Hardinge of Penshurst, in the County of Kent, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom

I have read this on the Wiki:

Baron Hardinge of Penshurst, in the County of Kent, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1910 for the diplomat the Hon. Sir Charles Hardinge, Viceroy and Governor-General of India from 1910 to 1916. He was the second son of Charles Hardinge, 2nd Viscount Hardinge.

Does this mean that Charles Hardinge, whose father was a viscount, rose to a prominent position and therefore was bestowed with the high rank of a baron? Please let me know. Thanks.

PS: I think I was wrong above. Because the baron is lowest grade in the UK peerage.

I think the low-level title "Baron Hardinge of Penshurst" was created for Charles Hardinge in order for him to be made Viceroy and Governor-General--the title was a prerequisite of the position.

But his father was a viscount - it's a high-level title. Isn't it?

Hi,

Did you read the link? does it help at all?

Remember that he was the second son, so he wouldn't inherit the title of viscount (unless the first son died).

That link did teach me new information.
