Bargain for

Hi

I wanted to master a martial art that was more than just vicious self defense, something that was spiritual and went beyond the physical. And with X I got much more than I had bargained for.

--- Does that last sentence say that he was surprised because that martial art "X" was really really good?

Sometimes it means "even better than I expected" - "It exceeded my expectations!"

Sometimes it means, "I opened up a can of worms." "I didn't realize what I was getting into!" ("I wish I hadn't done it.")
