Bare_knuckle litigation.

Could you please tell me what is the meaning of bare- knuckle litigation in this text?

some Boston lawyers thought that Hale and Dorr most resembled the big New York firms that specialized in what they called "bared-knuckle' litigation.

Thanks

It means rough or vicious without any restraints, in reference to "bare-knuckle boxing" in which participants do not wear gloves. In one place you say "bare-knuckle" and in another "bared-knuckle". Normally it is the former.
