bare wood floors

Do "bare wood floors" mean floors made of unpainted wood or floors with no carpeting?

One of my dictionaries says that bare wood means unpainted wood, but some people referring to this kind of floors on the Internet seem to be using this phrase in contrast with carpeting.

"Bare wood floors" is interpreted to mean wood floors that are bare (of rugs, etc,), not floors made of bare wood, which would indeed mean that they had no coating applied.
