The chart compares the share of the world's population in four nations in 1950 and 2002, as well as showing predictions for 2050.
It is clear that India and China are the most populous countries in given years. In addition, Japan's percentage of world population is by far lowest among given countries.
In 1950, Chinese people accounted for the largest percentage of total world population with 23%, compared to around 15% for India. In 2002, China saw a decrease of 8% in its share of global population, whereas an increase to approximately 18% was seen by India. In 2050, it is predicted that the figure for China will decrease moderately to only 15% and that for India will increase to nearly 20%, making it the most populous nation.
Regarding the USA and Japan, their shares of total world population in 1950 were by far lower, at about 7% and 4% respectively. In 2002, their figures decreased slightly to about 5% and 3% respectively. In 2050, it is projected that the figure for the USA will remain stable at roughly 5% and that for Japan will gradually drop to a mere 2%.
