Question

Hello,In England, Scotland and Ireland "bank holiday" means "public holiday," right?Are there "bank holidays" in the US?  If so, what is it like?Thank you,

I read so many British authors that sometimes I forget whether something is U.S. or not, but on this one, I can confirm that we do use it in certain contexts. Tomorrow I continue working to edit a reference guide, and in it we list what days we will be closed in observation of certain holidays, as well as other "bank holidays" in which the financial institutions (that also play a role in our business) will be closed even though we will be open.  However, this is a pretty restrictive context. I think we'd say just "a holiday" or even "an offical holiday" (which means the Post Office won't be open, or the banks, or the government offices, but all the stores will be having big sales).

I hear the term 'legal holiday'. In the business world, I've heard 'statutory holiday', usually shortened to a 'stat holiday'.
