As I understand A bench is the long seat in, for example, in a park.

Can Bank be used instead? That is, not only as a financial institution or the side area of a river?

I doubt it. Check these dictionary entries and see if you can find anything like that. There is a nautical usage, but that is specialized, not used in most ordinary conversations.
