Ban from vs ban on

"Umar Akmal handed three-year ban from all cricket by Chairman of the Disciplinary Panel Mr Justice (retired) Fazal-e-Miran Chauhan."

I read the above in the Times of India.

Please explain the use of the preposition "from vs on" in "ban from all cricket..."
