Ballboy

Hi there,

I've heard that ballboy is a boy who retrieves balls for tennis players.

How about other sports especially soccer?

Thank you in advance,

Iman

Tennis is actually pretty much the only sport where I have seen this (ball-boy or ball-girl). Sometimes baseball will have a "bat boy" or bat carrier, someone who brings the bats to the next player so that he can choose one. And golfers who are either very wealthy or very well accomplished might have a "caddy" who might carry your bag and retrieve your golf ball for you.

  • I have seen reference to a "ball-boy" in other sports, such as football, baseball, basketball, etc.
  • And, granted, I am not a great sports enthusiast.

Ball-boys are very common in professional football (AE soccer).

A referee or other match official will never retrieve a ball.
