Balding is common..

Please look at the following sentence:

Balding is much more common among White males than males of other races

I think the above sentence is correct, but my colleague says that the correct sentence should be: Balding is much more common among White males than among males of other races, since the original sentence can be mis-interpreted as:

Balding is more common among White males than are males of other races.

I am not convinced. Can someone please advice.

Thanks,
Bharosey.

Hi, Please look at the following sentence: Balding is much more common among White males than males of other races I think the above sentence is correct, yes, seems acceptable to me but my colleague says that the correct sentence should be: Balding is much more common among White males than among males of other races , this is OK, too, although I'd prefer than among those of other races since the original sentence can be mis-interpreted as: Balding is more common among White males than are males of other races . This seems like a nonsensical meaning. I am not convinced.

ok how about this:

The status of women is well below men.

Is the above sentence illogically comparing "status of women" with "men" or is "(status of) men" implied?

Basically I am looking for good grammar rules for ellipsis.

Thanks,

Is the above sentence illogically comparing "status of women" with "men" or is "(status of) men" implied? This seems like a more ambiguous or at least more unclear example, so I'd say

The status of women is well below that of men.
