Bags I go first

Hi

Could you please explain this sentence to me?

Bags I go first.

Thanks,

Tom

In BrE, "bags I" is an informal way of claiming the privilege to do something (often simply by virtue of being the first to stake a claim). I don't recall hearing it in a long while, and it feels kind of dated to me. However, I'm not completely certain about its current status.

  • Maybe it is still used by someone somewhere.

"Begs" is a childish expression of enthusiasm, alacrity, or desire.

* Bags I go first.
* Bags not I said that!
* Bags I!
* Bags, I have first go!
* I bags that ice cream
* Bags you take my picture first!

Don't know anything about its etymology. Maybe somebody from the UK knows?!

Hi,

I agree with what's been said.

In N. America, I hear

eg I've got dibs on that piece of cake. I'm the first one to claim that piece of cake.

I'm interested in that too. I had a quick trawl but didn't turn up much. I suppose the obvious suggestion is that it has something to do with "to bag" in the sense of "to capture", but I really have no idea.
