Grammar

Bad grammar discussion between myself and a friend.

I am having a debate with a friend over something he posted on a social network and i am looking for a correct answer if anyone could help me.

He posted "Anybody got any dodgy coloured suits/shirts/ties they don't want/can borrow me for NYE?"

I tried to explain that it should be lend not borrow as he is asking someone to lend him an item.

If he wanted to use the word borrow i thought it should have been "Anybody got any dodgy coloured suits/shirts/ties they don't want/ I could borrow for NYE?"

This may sound daft to people that read this but i am just trying to find out if i am correct in thinking this?

Thank you for your help

You are correct: You 'lend to' and 'borrow from' - so somebody lends a shirt, 'to' you or you borrow it 'from' them.

I already understand 'borrowing' from and 'lending to' its one of my pet hates that some people really don't even understand the difference.

The main difference of opinion between us was my telling him his original statement was incorrect and it should say lend and not borrow due to the way the statement is written.

If you could clarify this then i can very smugly show him this p

There isn’t much to clarify. To lend is to give, and to borrow is to take. Show your friend a dictionary.

The dictionary definition is what he came back at me with to start after i corrected him.

He assumes that because he will be borrowing an item it is correct to use borrow in the statement but it says borrow me?

Where as i said he is asking somebody to lend him something so the way he has written it, It should say lend me?

Which word would you use in that statement?

Then he assumes wrong. For borrow to be possible, the sentence would have to be changed.

Anybody got any suits I can borrow? correct
