Backtrack

Hey. I would like to know if backtracked is okay here?

Jeff followed the thief. Suddenly the thief turned around and pulled a knife. Jeff backtracked and fell on his ass. Then scrambled to his feet and ran.

If he backtracked, he turned around and walked back to where he came from. I don't think you mean that.

I think you mean he backed up, or maybe backed off. He took a step or two backw
