Backshifting

I thought you were really good when it comes/came to women.

Should the third verb, or I don't know what you call it, be backshifted in cases like the above? Thanks.

Top answer

Logically, comes is correct. Backshifting happens a lot in English, and came makes perfectly good sense to many ears.

If you are talking only about the past, e.g., years ago, then use came. If you are questioning a person’s ability, backshifting is optional.
