backshifting?
Hi,
Hypothetical situation: I was in a community meeting and heard some pertinent comments being made on our company. Someone named John Doe has said that our company's philanthropic gestures toward the community is very well received and he thought we need to continue to expand on that effort.
(after few days later at a company meeting)
President: OK, do you have anything to report from the community meeting you attend?
1. Me: Mr. Doe said (possibly can use 'thought'?) that our philanthropic gestures were well received and we need to continue to expand on our philanthropic support on the community.
Or should I say?
2. Me: Mr. Doe said that our philanthropic gestures were well received and we needed to continue to expand on our philanthropic support on the community.
I think the former version is OK but cannot explain the reason even to myself. Help.
