Back to the kitchen or back into the kitchen?

Hi Everyone!

I'm confused. Is it

He took the bowls back into the kitchen

or

He took the bowls back to the kitchen

I was surprised to see that to the kitchen (or any room) was used a lot more, even in novels and newspaper articles.

Have I missed something? I thought into was correct.

Thanks
