'Back to the Future' DeLorean, costumes and props set for auction

Hi

I have just read this headline: 'Back to the Future' DeLorean, costumes and props set for auction.

I have checked the dictionary for "props" but I still don't get clear picture of the meaning used in this context. What kind of article are called 'props' when referring to movies? Thank you for your help.

Jackson At a movie shoot, a prop is a portable object other than furniture or costumes used on the set of a play or movie. Remember the clocktower in "Back to the Future"? That was a prop.

'Props' is the abbreviation of 'properties', all of the physical paraphernalia that the actors worked with: furniture, skateboards, bicycles, objects on the sets, etc. 'Hand props' are smaller items that the actors handled: glasses, bottles, books, menus, banana peels, etc, etc.

(I think the clock tower was more 'scenery', John.)

You're absolutely right Mister Micawber, the clock tower is defnitely scenery.

I meant to say "the clock" - but now that you mention it, the clock would probably fall into the category of scenery too.

Some movie props are more memorable than others. The light labers in the Star Wars movies are more noteworthy than a cell phone someone uses in another movie.

The only prop from BTTF that I can recall is the guitar he uses at the dance... anything else stand out to you guys?

Don't forget Doc Brown's brain-wave analyzer.

Yeah, the guitar and the analyser. His skateboard and running shoes. Doc's futuristic sunglasses. And the sports records magazine.

How could I forget the skateboard?!
