back than a month early

This was said during a sports game. There seems to be something wrong with the sentence.
He's back more than a month early from what they expected him to come back.

Thanks

Yes, it's a horrible sentence. If said by a native speaker then probably they just got all their words mixed up. You can simply say "He's back more than a month earlier than (they) expected".
