Back into your mouth

He shot some liquid from his nose and she spit it back into his mouth.

Can we say back into his mouth even though it didn't come from his mouth? What does back refer to? Does it need to refer to mouth, or the entire person? Sorry, for the weird sentence, I couldn't think of a better example.
