Back in the race

Is it possible to use the phrase/expression "(to be back) in the race" in a figurative way?

If so, when do you use it?

Would you please give me a few examples?

Thank you.

Any use of the term that does not refer to an actual race (horse race, foot race, etc) is a figurative use of the phrase. Here is an example of one kind of race (trying to achieve something before other people do): Dr. George almost gave up, but now he is back in the race to invent a new deodorant.
