Please explain the meaning the time phrase below:

Back in the 1980s I was a student. Does this phrase carry the same meaning that During the 1980s... does ?

As far as i know they do not carry the same meaning.

"Back in the 1980s..." means that I was a student before 1980s but "during the 1980s.." means "throughout the 1980s.." I mean that "during the 1980s.." contains both at the beginig of 1980s and at the end of 1980s.

Thanks for taking part here. You was very close to the truth but a bit incorrect. I've just found out the answer. Back in the 1980s has the same meaning that In the 1980s apart from the Back carries that is was so long time ago...
