Babysat

This is said at a party about a woman who has brought her baby with her:

Don't listen to her, she's just cranky because her mom blew her off at the last minute. She should have babysat.

Don't listen to her, she's just cranky because her mom blew her off at the last minute. She should have been babysitting.

Are either of these natural? And is it obvious that it's the woman's mother who should have babysat/been babysitting?

No. It was obvious to me that she should have been babysitting, not her mother. Your mention of the alternative scenario has just confused
