Baby's first word/cooing

Hi,

In English what would be a baby's first and typical cooing sound? In French it would be "areu" (which is not a word!). A dictionnary translated it as "goo-goo". Does that ring a bell?

thanks so much!

Yes, "goo-goo" or "ga-ga" is what babies in cartoons usually "say." I don't know how accurate it is. Of course, babies also make ma-ma and da-da (or pa-pa-or ba-ba) sounds pretty early, which is probably why those sounds mean mother and father in many languages.

(I think my cat says "areu!")

If I recall, we refer to those "ga ga ga PA!" sounds as "babbling."

(I seem to remember they starting coming about the same time as copious amounts of drool.)
