‘Aye-aye, Captain’

What is the correct way to write 'Aye aye, Captain'? Do we place a hyphen between the words 'aye'? Does it mean ‘Yes, sir, Captain!'?

Thanks.

No, it means 'Yes, yes, Captain'.

In my experience on the Spanish Main, the usual expression is 'Aye-aye, Cap'n!

Another thorny nautical question is how to punctuate Yo-ho-ho!

Hi

Spanish Main? On NCC-1701 we would say:

- Aye, aye, Captain

- Aye, aye, sir.

- Aye, sir

- Aye.

The Shorter Oxford has it "aye, aye, sir!" The aye-aye is Daubentonia Madagascariensis.

That term is used to verify that you understood and will follow the order. On my boat a verbatim repeat back follow by a aye sir was acceptable. You would use it to formally reply to any officer or enlisted that outranks you. When asked a yes/no question you would just reply yes sir.

"Aye-aye" would be used to acknowledge a command. A simple "aye" is an affirmative or, a response to something said by a superior tha isn't a command.
