When you use an ax to cut down a tree, what is the verb? Do you say, He axed the tree?

I wouldn't use "ax" or "axe" as a verb.
He chopped down the tree.
EDIT: Let me rephrase. We might "axe" a project to stop it, but I wouldn't use it for a literal tree. Just as a metaphor.
