Awkward vs. embarrassing

"It was an awkward situation."

"It was an embarrassing situation."

1) Does a native speaker perceive any shades of difference?
2) Is there any difference in the meaning between adjectives awkward and embarrassing to a native ear?

3) Is it okay to say: "I embarrassed myself?"
