Awkward sentence, how to make this sentence more coherent?

Qn:He saw a handphone that he likes so much and (he) wanted to steal it.

Can the (he) be omitted?
How else can I make the sentence more coherent? It seems rather awkward to me. Thank you.

'So' will always make it too casual to write. Is 'handphone' used in your part of the world? I have never heard it.
