Question: Would you say the use of dashes in questions, as the following questions, is correct?
1. Would you mind lending me a helping hand, John -- to get my feet off the ground?
2. Have you met my friend -- my best friend and close companion?
3. Pens, pencils and paper -- do you think they are what every student should have with them all the time in school?
I am sorry, but could you help me with this -- which is off-topic? (I just wrote another question with a dash. Should I rewrite this? Is it correct to replace the dash with a comma?) Anyway, please help me with this?
Question: Do you think having the abbreviation in the middle of the sentence is not good writing practice?
I saw a man with a cap, harp, etc. coming toward me.

Your m-dashes are just fine for transcribing dialogue or writing informally. Etc. and other abbreviations often occur mid-sentence; no harm is done.
