Awhile or a while?

Hello,

Please help. I'm a bit confused about this. Since awhile is an adverb, can I use it like this:

He had come with a lot of luggage, as if he intended to stay awhile.

Top answer

Yes. People also use "stay a while", and, of course, "stay for a while". The one that is definitely wrong is "stay for awhile".
